Woman decreases anxiety on vacation.

Have you ever needed a vacation from your vacation?

Vacations are supposed to be a time of relaxation and enjoyment.

But, they can also bring on feelings of anxiety.

Whether it's the stress of travel plans, unfamiliar environments, or the disruption of your daily routine, anxiety can quickly settle in.

I want you to enjoy your time away and take care of your mental health.

Here are five strategies to help you manage and prevent anxiety.

1. Plan Ahead

When you don’t have a concrete plan, you can feel overwhelmed. So, plan your trip thoroughly in advance to decrease your anxiety. .

Here are a few ways to have peace of mind before you leave:

  • Research your destination. How will you get there? Where will you stay? Do they speak a different language? Do they use a different currency? Are there special events going on while you are there?

  • Make a packing list. Click here for the one that I really like.

  • Don't forget your medications! Make sure that you are not going to run out while on vacation and have some emergency medications with you.

  • Make reservations for restaurants, excursions, and family activities. Do you need to schedule any activities ahead of time? It could be an activity by yourself, with a partner, or with kids. Try not to wait until you get there because some activities may be booked. P.S. Some restaurants may not take reservations so you may have to arrive early.

When you have a clear itinerary you will feel more in control and reduce the uncertainty that often triggers anxiety.

2. Maintain a Routine

You go on vacation to take a break from your everyday life, but sometimes this disruption to your routine can be a source of anxiety.

Here are some tips to help you stay on track:

  • Keep a schedule to help guide your day during vacation. But don't forget to plan downtime in your itinerary to relax and recharge.

  • Pack items that help you stick to your routine (like your favorite snacks or refillable water bottle or shoes for walking or going to the gym)

  • Try to keep our regular sleep schedule and regular mealtimes. This will help regulate your body without disrupting your usual routine.

If you can keep some aspects of your regular schedule, you’ll be able to enjoy a sense of stability. And, your body and mind will be in less of a shock when you go back to the real world.

3. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Vacations shouldn’t be overwhelming.

Here are some tips to help you stay grounded and calm during your vacation:

  • Set aside time each day for a quick meditation session or some gentle stretching.

  • Listen to a short podcast every morning to start your day.

  • Don’t rush, take your time. Enjoy the beauty of where you are visiting.

  • Practice deep breathing, meditation, or yoga.

Taking some time for yourself during your vacation to practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques can be very effective in managing anxiety.

4. Limit Stimulants

Vacations are a time for you to enjoy yourself. But, it’s important to be mindful of things that can trigger your anxiety. Stimulants like alcohol, caffeine, and sugar can be a trigger. These are substances that raise the levels of nervous activity in your body.

Here are healthier options to indulge in:

  • Choose hydrating drinks like water or herbal teas.

  • Don't like drinking water? Try these hydration drops from Buoy. They can be added to any beverage.

  • Maintain a balanced diet to keep your energy levels up. Get adequate protein and your daily doses of fruits and vegetables.

It is very important to have a balance, while still enjoying yourself and your favorite things during your time away.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

Traveling might not always go as planned, and that’s okay. Remain flexible. Be kind to yourself when things don’t go as planned. This will help you manage your anxiety. It’s okay to take a break or change your plans if you are feeling overwhelmed.

Here are some tips to show yourself some love:

  • Don’t be afraid to say no to activities that you’re not comfortable with.

  • Allow yourself time to rest.

  • Don’t stress, things don’t need to be perfect all the time.

Remember, taking care of your mental health is crucial, even on vacation.

These 5 tips are meant to help direct you during your travels and offer alternatives to manage anxiety, but knowing what works for you is my best advice.

You don’t have to do all of these things. Pick one and then try another.

Enjoy your travels and take care of yourself!!

Your well-being is just as important as your destination!
